I was working at a television channel and was in desperate need of a personal assistant. We had advertised, and it proved to be quite the task in finding an applicant with the remote skills needed to fill the position. I had pretty much given up hope when the HR manager put a resume on my desk that seemed like a perfect fit.
It was from a lady who had studied the field and also had the ideal work experience to match. It all seemed too good to be true—there had to be a catch. And there was, she is Spanish and was not fully literate in English—yikes. I went ahead with the interview regardless but was not entirely convinced that she could perform all the duties with ease, as I was concerned that too much would be lost in translation. None-the-less, I asked that she come back and spend the day with me in the office so that I could ascertain her level of understanding and the quality of her execution. She was thrilled and arrived the next day with much excitement and enthusiasm. She worked diligently and displayed that she could be trusted in every area of the position, and we hired her immediately. She worked half days and learnt English and digital marketing in her spare time. We worked very closely together and got to know each other well. I learnt a lot from her and appreciated her ethics and values.
She came to Cape Town to work and study, and the mere fact that she had the faith and courage to venture out to a distant continent on her own to pursue her goals made me admire her will and drive immensely. For her, there is absolutely no reason not to—only opportunities to achieve success. We’d spend one day together on the weekends and do fun things like road trips and excursions. We became good friends and after she had left the country and returned to her own, we remained in contact and are still very close as we continue our friendship.
I have told her this already, but I’ll reiterate: Marta has the soul of summer and is as beautiful, inside and out, as a sunflower. She radiates the type of warmth that simply cannot go unnoticed. She is a gifted lass and a true lioness. A bold, beautiful and brainy brunette with whom I share a brilliant bond, which is far beyond the bounds of business.
