Piña Perfection

by EJ

People often ask me what my drink of choice is when I'm in a social setting and are surprised that there are literally very few beverages that meet my fancy, and in all honesty, I'm not much of an alcohol drinker to begin with. Some would say that I'm wasting my time as I probably only indulge in booze about seven times a year at most, which is on my birthday, Xmas, New Year, an awards ceremony, an important event, a friend's birthday party, or at a significant social gathering of sorts. I've simply never acquired the habit, and to this day I have never tasted a beer, nor do I do tots, shots, or any hard liquor.

I can appreciate a glass of red wine, specifically a Syrah or Shiraz, on occasion and more so in winter as it has a soothingly warm effect and helps me fall asleep quite quickly. A glass or two of bubbly for celebratory milestones is also something I'm happy to participate in. My "go-to" for an alternative to a desert is Amarula, as I find it to be a silky-smooth, scrumptious liqueur that tastes like a decadent Crème Brûlée in liquid form.

I tend to be more of a summer sundowner person who prefers a well-made cocktail whilst ounging at a beach bar, resort, or hotel on a lazy weekend or vacation. I have come to realise that the spirit that seems to gel well with my palate is rum, as all of the mixers that I think are the best are made with it, such as a Daiquiri, Mojito, Mai Tai, Cuba Libre, Punch, and my personal favourite, a proper Piña Colada blended to Puerto Rican perfection.

If you are looking for a place that makes unexpected blends and brews and the best cocktails in Cape Town, visit a pretty spot on the Camps Bay strip called Café Caprice.
